November 2009 News from Phillips’ Frog Pad: A big THANK YOU to all parents who sent in materials and/or volunteered their time for the Halloween party. Your involvement is greatly appreciated! Dear Family, Your students continue to work very hard this year. You probably see lots of social studies homework coming home. The NYS Social Studies Assessment is Monday and Tuesday November 16-17. We are reviewing what the students have learned in previous years as well as learning how to write an effective Document-based essay. We are also offering review sessions from 7:30-8:20 a.m. on select days for the next two weeks. Please send in the permission slip if you have not yet at want your child to take advantage of this extra review. Also, Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up. Please look for the scheduling notice to come home and return at your earliest convenience so that I can make sure to accommodate your schedule. Thanks! J | Fitness: Please make sure your child wears/brings sneakers every day. As long as it is not raining, we try to go outside, so a jacket is necessary as well. | | Math: Students in my math class are discovering different methods to do long division. They will decide which method they prefer and are free to use whichever way that may be. Encourage children to continue practicing multiplication and division facts at home. The more fluent they are, the easier the new concepts for them will be to learn! | | Science: We continue our study of the earth’s layers. Students learned a fun rap that describes the different properties of the layers. | | Social Studies: As stated above, we are diligently reviewing and perfecting our essay-writing skills in preparation for the state test. | | Writing: We have taken a break from the 7 writing traits to focus on writing DBQ essays for social studies. | | Reading: We just began Theme 2: Give It All You’ve Got! We will be reading stories about people who face challenges and give their all to be the best they can. Students can personally relate to these stories in many ways; such as experiences in school, sports, and friendships. | | Important Dates: 11/3 S.S. a.m. review begins (selected mornings until 11/13) 11/11 No School (Veteran’s Day) 11/12 Picture Make-ups 11/16-17 NYS SS Assessment 11/20 Early dismissal for students/p.m. Parent/Teacher conferences 11/23 Thanksgiving Feast (school lunch) 11/24 No school for students – Parent/Teacher conferences all day 11/25-11/29 Thanksgiving Break | As always, you can contact me by phone (343-2480 ext 5000) or by email (CJPhillips@bataviacsd.org) with any questions, comments, or concerns.
