PRESENTING: ROOM 109 DIRECTORS: MRS. WIEDRICH & MISS MURPHY ASST. DIRECTOR: MRS. CARNEY We are simply amazed at how quickly the past few months have flown by. It is certainly a reflection of how busy we have been with our students! As we mentioned in newsletters, we are so very proud of all of them for their dedication and hard work as we worked together to prepare for our state exams. We would like to thank all of you for assisting us in this preparation with your support from home. Although sighs from the children often accompanied the distribution of the review packets, we are confident that they were effective in preparing them for the exams. The children's feedback was one of excitement, as they returned from studying the countries of France, with Mrs. Ditzel and Brazil, with Mrs. Dobbertin. During their rotations they learned a great deal about the culture of each country. They will be finishing the year in Japan with us. They are looking forward to eating with chopsticks, and learning how to create objects with origami. Our hope is that by "experiencing" different cultures, they will exit 3rd grade with a greater appreciation for them. After many weeks of hard work, our students are in the process of putting together their country "poster." It will include their report, flag and map of the country they researched. They will be displayed in the hallway for you to view during our country presentation. We have enjoyed watching the lifecycle of our painted lady butterflies. The children enthusiastically observed each phase with a "close eye." Each day they entered the room, they quickly rotated to our center to see if any changes had taken place. They enjoyed "becoming" their caterpillars and butterflies, as they wrote journal entries that highlighted important happenings in their lives. As we mentioned, this piece of writing allowed for a great deal of creativity and their "voices" were heard. After working as a TEAM throughout the year, the children filled our team jug and we had our celebration. The children enjoyed a pizza lunch in the room as we viewed a portion of the movie, The Indian in the Cupboard (we read the story in class and the children loved it!). We ventured outside (yes, that was the 88 degrees day) and played a quick game of kickball. The heat got the best of them, so we dimmed the lights and enjoyed ice cream sandwiches! As a TEAM we enjoyed some time together. As our Luxurious Lunch Challenge came to a close, we entered all of the names of the children who achieved their goals (less than 5 tardies, and receiving a 3 or 4 in academic and behavioral areas) into a box and drew the name of the student who would be going with Mr. Kesler for a luxurious lunch. Congratulations to Alec Frongetta! We hope you have an enjoyable limo ride and lunch at Sunny's Restaurant. We congratulate all of our students for working hard toward their goals and for their own personal accomplishments. We had a 3rd grade celebration (viewing Despereaux in the auditorium) after the 2nd marking period to celebrate these and are looking forward to our last one celebrating our achievements for the 3rd marking period. Closing "Scenes" As the final weeks of this year have "mysteriously" fallen upon us, we would like to share some of the upcoming activities that we are looking forward to sharing with our students. Friday, June 11th- Country Presentations (times to follow) Friday, June 18th- Class Picnic @ Austin Park We have enjoyed seeing your children's growth throughout this school year. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions/concerns/comments. The best way to reach us is through our e-mails at tlwiedrich@bataviacsd.org or jamurphy@bataviacsd.org. Thank you for your continued support in your child's education. Mrs. Wiedrich and Miss Murphy

Math Magician
Great practice for math facts. This site allows you to choose the operation and level, and it assigns an amount of time that you have to answer a certain number of questions in.
»
Math Cats
From home page click on the multi-colored "mathcats" box to enter the categories. Select "math cats explore" and scroll down to the "fact family cards" and "interactive mulitplication table." Both of these are great ways to practice the facts.

Math Playground
This site offers a variety of options from flashcard on-line practice to making worksheets that you can print for your child to practice. I especially like the multiplication chart option where the children fill in the missing numbers on a multiplication chart.
