Mrs. Cain

I am very proud to be working for the Batavia City School District as a Speech/Language Pathologist for my second year.  I am a Speech Pathology graduate of SUNY Geneseo and have been working in the Speech/Language field since 2000.  Prior to working at the Batavia City School District, I worked for 14 years in the Batavia area teaching children ages birth- 5 years through a private agency. I currently hold a New York State License in Speech Pathology and I am certified by the American Speech Language and Hearing Association.  My office is located at John Kennedy Intermediate School where I service the majority of my caseload.  I also travel to Jackson Primary and St. Paul's 2 days a week.  I am looking forward to working in the district for many years to come!

  • Welcome to Speech and Language Therapy

There are several different speech language therapy programs that students at John Kennedy may be enrolled in. Listening and processing skills, auditory memory, follwing directions, expressive langauge and articulation skills can impact a student's learning both inside and ouitside of the classroom.  Students needing assistance in any of these areas can be provided with individual or small group instruction to address their needs in these areas.  Specific criteria by the district therapists are used to determine eligibility and frequency of services.

Currently the Batavia City School District is using The Five Minute Kids program to address articulation delays. Students enrolled in this program receive individual articulation therapy for 5-7 minutes one to five times per week depending on their severity.  Language Enrichment groups address the needs of students who require extra support in in their understanding and use of language. This program is provided in the speeech therapy room and students receive instruction in small groups outside of their classroom.  Students in this program enhance their language skills necessary to communicate both in and out of the classroom.

Please feel free to contact me either at my e-mail address or at the following number: 343-2480 ext. 5000 if you would like more specific information regarding the program.

    5 Minute Kids Program

The 5 Minute Kids™ is a program developed by Susan Sexton, a retired speech language pathologist from Lapeer County Schools, Michigan, to help children with speech sound delays. The purpose of this program is to minimize the amount of time that a student spends out of the classroom, and to improve the quality of time that the child spends working on individual speech sounds in therapy. A student enrolled in the 5 Minute Kids™ program receives individual therapy for five to seven minute sessions, two to four times per week. The student practices targeted speech sounds by repeating sounds, syllables, words, naming pictures, reading, and conversation.

Completion of homework is an intergral part of the 5 Minute Kids program. Students in this program will recieve homework after each speech session which should take approximately 5-10 minutes to cpmplete.  If a student is unable to produce a sound correctly they may not recieve homework becuase incorrect practice can cause bad habits to form.  Please practice the homework assigned and sign your child's speech folder in the designated area.  Students will accumulate stickers on a sticker chart which when completed can be turned in for a treat.
