Title I is the largest federal aid program for elementary, middle and high schools. Through Title I, the federal government gives money to school districts around the country based on the number of low-income families in each district. Schools qualify as Title I if their poverty rate is above the district poverty rate average as indicated through enrollment in free and reduced breakfast and lunch programs.
Four schools in the Batavia City School District have been designated Title I schools. They are:
- Jackson Primary School, 411 South Jackson, Batavia, NY
- John Kennedy Elementary School 116 Vine Street, Batavia, NY
- Batavia Middle School, 96 Ross Street, Batavia, NY
- Batavia High School, 260 State Street, Batavia, NY
Each district uses its Title I funds to provide supplemental services, or Academic Intervention Services (AIS), for children who are behind in school.
Schools and parents have a lot of choice in how they set up their Title I program, as long as it helps low-achieving students meet the same standards that have been set for all other students.
