History of Red Ribbon Week: In 1985, drug traffickers in Mexico killed Federal drug enforcement agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.  Angered by his death and the damaging effects of drugs on our culture, people in Camarena’s hometown of Calexico, California began wearing Red Ribbons in his honor.  The trend spread across the country and in 1988 Congress proclaimed the last full week in October as National Red Ribbon Week.  The event continues to grow as more and more schools show their support for a drug-free America.            Unfortunately, unhealthy messages continue to barrage our children from other sources. The aim of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to equip children and their parents with what they need to build a healthy future unspoiled by drugs.  By reaching one child, one family, one community, we’re building a better future for our country.  And, as each person wears their Red Ribbon, we’re building hope - which is the best prevention of all.
