Book Reading at Jackson Stresses Kindness

Once upon a time, there was a school where every student had the same book read to them during the same week. This was no fairytale, however!

Jackson Primary implemented the One School, One Book program with a story that inspires kindness, titled, We’re All Wonders, by R. J. Palacio. (Ms. Palacio also wrote the book, Wonder, which is for an older audience and which has been made into a movie.) In this story, adapted for young children, a boy who says he is ordinary in many ways but does not look the same as others, is often excluded and even ridiculed. His hope, since he cannot change the way he looks, is that others will change the way they see him – as well as others who are different - and ultimately recognize that we are all wonders deserving of kindness.

In addition to hearing the story, classes participated in various activities that stressed kindness. Many colored banners with the word “KINDNESS,” discussed what it means to be kind and unkind, and acted out scenarios in which they could show kindness to others.
