Mr. Warren
Brief Description of Course
AP Calculus AB introduces the students to Limits and Continuity, Derivatives, Applications of Derivatives, The Definite Integral, Differential Equations and Mathematical Modeling, and Applications of the Definite Integral. Students will develop the ability to: explore and solve mathematical problems, think critically, work collaboratively with others, and communicate mathematical ideas clearly. Some of the important goals for the course are that the students will be able to: work with functions represented in a variety of ways, make connections between the meaning of the derivative and the rate of change, understand the relationship between the derivative and the definite integral as expressed in both parts of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, write complete (and accurate) mathematical sentences and use technology to help solve problems.
Statement from the Teacher
This course is an Advanced Placement course and it will be taught as such. The aim of this course will be to challenge you as a student. This may be a new thing for some students, but rest assured that each one of you will be better off being challenged than not. At times you will be frustrated and my job as your teacher will be to help you work through those times and come out with an even better understanding of the topic.
Required Materials: Students should bring these to class every day:
Student Handbook
Two Inch 3Ring Binder with at least 5 dividers (Supplemental Packet; Quizzes / Tests; AP Review / Practice Exams; Journal)
Looseleaf paper (for Journal section and assorted uses)
TI89 Graphing Calculator (you can borrow one from the school)
Positive Attitude and Working Brain
Flipping the Classroom:
In an effort to increase the amount of contact time between teacher and students, I have implemented a flipped classroom for my AP Calculus classes. Each night, there will be a video lecture to watch. This video must be viewed prior to class because the inclass work will be based off of the lecture. Students that have not watched the video and filled in their notes will be required to stay after class the same day to make up that time. Continued negligence will lead to further consequences.
Absences:
Attendance is critical for success in this class.
When you are absent, I will place what you miss in the Red File Folder in the back of the classroom. Please look there for any materials that you missed while absent.
No makeup tests/quizzes will be given during class time.
Contacting Me:
I will make myself available whenever possible for student questions. You can email me at MWarren@bataviacsd.org with any questions or concerns that you might have.
Grading:
Completion of Notes (5 points)
Weekly Homework and Review Assignments (1025 points each)
Quizzes (Approximately 10 points each)
Tests (3050 points each)
Group projects, written reports, and journal entries (1025 points each)
Midterm and Final Project
Tests:
Tests will be given after the completion of each chapter.
Each test will consist of freeresponse and multiplechoice questions for each chapter as well as review questions.
This course outline is subject to changes throughout the school year based on student and teacher needs.
I shall strive to create a positive supportive learning environment and educational experience for all students and pledge to respect each of my students as a unique person, not a test score.
