Dear Parents,

We are ready to begin our Parents as Reading Partners Program.  We hope you are excited about this program.  Our goal is to have all of our students reading for at least 20 minutes every day and recording their reading in their Reader Response Journals.  This reading challenge will run from 11/30-12/18.  We have a building wide goal of having all of our students read for a combined 25,000 minutes.  If we reach our building goal, students will have a fun surprise awaiting them before Winter Break. As part of this challenge students will have a chance to guess where Mr. Sutton is reading twice a week and be entered to win a prize!

The PARP program's primary purpose is to encourage reading at home.  Reading is one of the most important skills learned in school, but like all skills, requires much practice.  Children not only need to learn the skills of reading, but to discover the joys of reading.  Sharing that joy with children is the goal of our PARP program.

We are asking that for these fifteen days, you do the following with your children:

  • Read with your child at least 20 minutes or more per day.  If you have more than one child, you can all read together at the same time (if you wish).

  • The child's reading partner can be a parent, older relative, friend, neighbor, babysitter, or any interested adult; a parent is preferred.

  • Children may read to you, or you may read to them.

  • Have your child react to what they read that night by recording their thoughts in their Reader Response Journal.

  • Each day after your child has completed his/her reading, track the minutes read on the coloring sheet.

  • Please fill out the Google form recording your reading each day. Click here for the form.

We look forward to having you as a reading partner.  We are hoping for 100% participation.
